Moving the Materials
- Always move the package with at least two people.
- Clear a clean, flat, and padded pathway to the installation site.
- Lift from the bottom of the crate—never drag or pull on packaging.
- Use furniture sliders or a dolly for transport over hard surfaces.
- Open the crate carefully at the final installation location to minimize handling of the heavy slabs.
Unpacking with Care
- Place the package on its side on a soft surface (e.g., carpet, blankets).
- Carefully cut through packing materials. Each marble panel is individually wrapped in protective film; leave this film on until after installation to prevent scratches and stains during the process.
- Inspect all pieces against your order checklist under good lighting before proceeding.
Site & Tool Preparation
Ensuring a Proper Foundation
The subfloor must be perfectly level, clean, dry, and structurally sound. Any unevenness will be visible through thin stone panels. Verify this with a long level.
Required Tools & Materials
Gather these items before starting:
- High-quality, polymer-modified thin-set mortar suitable for marble.
- Notched trowel (size as specified by mortar manufacturer).
- Tile spacers.
- Rubber mallet and long level.
- Grout and sealing products specifically designed for natural stone.
- Wet saw with diamond blade (for any necessary cuts).
- Grout float, buckets, sponges.
Step-by-Step Installation Process
1. Dry Layout & Planning
Arrange all marble pieces around the fireplace area without adhesive. This allows you to:
- Ensure a harmonious flow of the natural veining pattern.
- Confirm all pieces fit perfectly together.
- Plan and execute any necessary cuts using a wet saw with a diamond blade before applying mortar.
2. Applying Mortar & Setting Stone
- Mix the thin-set mortar according to the manufacturer's directions.
- Using your notched trowel, apply mortar to a small section of subfloor (approx. 3-4 sq ft), combing it evenly to create consistent ridges.
- Firmly place each marble tile into the mortar bed using a slight twisting motion.
- Gently tap with a rubber mallet to ensure full contact and achieve a level surface with adjacent tiles. Use spacers consistently between tiles.
3. Grouting & Sealing
- Grouting: Allow the mortar to cure fully (typically 24-48 hours). Remove spacers and apply grout with a float, pressing it firmly into all joints. Wipe away excess grout with a damp sponge before it forms a haze on the stone surface.
- Sealing: After the grout has cured (per product instructions), thoroughly clean the marble surface and apply an impregnating sealer formulated for calcareous stone like this marble variant. This crucial step protects against stains.
Post-Installation Care & Maintenance
Initial Curing Period
Do not place weight on or use the fireplace area for at least 72 hours after installation to allow materials to set completely.
Long-Term Cleaning & Protection
To preserve beauty:
- Clean only with pH-neutral cleaners specifically designed for natural stone.
- Avoid acidic cleaners such as vinegar, lemon juice, or generic products, as they will etch and permanently dull polished marble surfaces.
