The Non-Negotiable Subfloor Standard

The substrate must be an immovable, perfectly flat platform. Any deflection, unevenness, or instability will telegraph through to the stone, potentially causing cracks, lippage (uneven tile edges), or tiles becoming loose over time. The base must be:

• Structurally Sound: Capable of supporting significant weight without flexing.
• Perfectly Level: Variations must not exceed 1/8 inch over a 10-foot span.
• Clean and Dry: Free of all dust, debris, sealants, waxes, or moisture.

Recommended Substrate Systems

For interior installations over wood framing:

Concrete Backer Board (Cement Board)

This is the industry-preferred method. Products like HardieBacker or Durock provide a dimensionally stable, water-resistant surface that offers superior bonding for thinset mortar.

Plywood Underlayment

When used over an existing wood subfloor, an additional layer of exterior-grade plywood (minimum 1/2" thick) is essential to add rigidity and minimize deflection between joists.

1. Structural Assessment & Planning

• Verify that floor joists meet the stringent deflection standard required for natural stone: L/720 or better. This is twice as rigid as the requirement for ceramic tile.
• Plan for expansion joints around the entire perimeter of the room and at all doorways to accommodate natural movement.

2. Subfloor Conditioning

• Thoroughly clean the existing subfloor.
• Correct any unevenness using a quality self-leveling underlayment compound as needed to achieve the necessary flatness.

3. Underlayment Installation

For Cement Board: Apply a layer of polymer-modified thinset mortar to the subfloor using a notched trowel. Secure the boards with manufacturer-recommended screws. All seams must then be covered with alkali-resistant mesh tape and embedded in thinset.

For Plywood: Securely screw down panels with appropriate fasteners, staggering seams away from those in the structural subfloor below.

4. Final Checks Before Installation

• Ensure the entire prepared surface is clean and ready for mortar application.
• In areas with potential ground moisture (e.g., slabs on grade), consult an installer about incorporating a vapor barrier beneath your chosen underlayment system.
